Wed 30 Nov 11	First day of mating. 48 hours after the first mating the bitch should be mated again. Subsequent matings occurring over a period of time enhance the chances of fertilization taking place. The spermatozoa migrate up through the cervix.
Thu 1 Dec 11	Sperm travel searching for a mature ripened eggs.
Thu 1 Dec 111 - Fri 2 Dec 11	Spermatozoa reach the eggs in the oviducts.
Fri 2 Dec 111 - Sat 3 Dec 11	Fertilisation occurs in the oviducts which lead from the ovaries to the uterus.
Sat 3 Dec 11 - Mon 5 Dec 11	Fertilised eggs migrate down the oviducts and into the uterine horns. The migration continue to enable even spacing of the embryos. During this migration the eggs will grow into a blastocystes.
Sun 11 Dec 11 - Tue 13 Dec 11	The blastocystes implant in the wall of the uterus.
Sun 11 Dec 111 - Sun 25 Dec 11	The blastocystes will grow into an embryos. During the next two weeks the important organs will develop.
Wed 14 Dec 11 - Wed 21 Dec 11	Dams nipples begin to pink enlarge. The fur on the dams belly and around the nipples may become thinner.
Tue 20 Dec 11 - Tue 27 Dec 11	Morning sickness might occur due to hormonal changes or stretching and distension of the uterus. Dam may appear a bit apathetic. She may be off her feed for a while and vomit from time to time. Feeding the dam several meals spaced throughout the day might help. Your veterinarian may want to prescribe a drug to relax the uterus.
Sun 25 Dec 11 - Thu 29 Dec 11	An experienced person (a breeder or a veterinarian) can tell by careful palpation whether the dam is pregnant. It's now the best time to do this because the embryos are walnut-sized now and easy to count.
Wed 28 Dec 11	Start to increase the dams food ration. Don't overfeed, excessive weight gain should be avoided. The foetuses are now and are fully developed miniature dogs.
Tue 3 Jan 12	The Dams abdomen starts to get larger.
Fri 13 Jan 12	It's very easy now to feel the puppies, counting them might be a bit more difficult.
Mon 16 Jan 112 - Tue 24 Jan 12	Dam begins to spend a lot more time in self-grooming. Her breasts become even more swollen. She may become a bit restlessness and begin to search for a suitable place to have her puppies.
Wed 18 Jan 12	The dam might lose her appetite during this period. Her abdomen can be crowded with puppies. It is better to feed several smaller meals spaced throughout the day. You can easily detect abdominal movement now.
Wed 18 Jan 112 - Thu 2 Feb 12	Nipples and vulva should be gently cleaned with warm water, you might want to trim the hairs surrounding the nipples, to allow easier access for the puppies to suck.
Sat 28 Jan 112 - Tue 31 Jan 12	Milky fluid may be expressed from the nipples.
Sun 29 Jan 12	You might want to start taking the dam’s rectal temperature each morning and evening.
Wed 1 Feb 12	Twelve to 24 hours before she is due to deliver, the dam’s rectal temperature may drop from 101 to 98 degrees. Clear discharge from the vulva might occur.
Thu 2 Feb 112	Expected date of whelp. Of course this is just an average. Whelping may take place from the 59th to the 65th day. Puppies born before the 58th day will probably be too young to survive.

Puppies at 3 Weeks

Cleo and the puppies are doing great. Again Cleo has proven to be a most attentive and tidy mom. She nurses her pups all at the same time or sometimes 5 and then the other 5. Puppies are growing well. Most are the same size around 2 lbs. 2 of the pups are closer to 3 lbs. Many friends and families have been visiting Cleo and her babies. Cleo never seems to mind human visitors (she thinks they are there to see her!) She will allow Rheo and Myleigh her dog family to visit in the room now if they lie quietly on the bed. Myleigh ignores her sister and at times will crawl into the pool and let the pups crawl all over her. Baxter is allowed to kiss a puppy if I am holding it. He is allowed to come to the doorway!

Getting Ready for New Homes! Week 8

Well life is really busy. Temperament testing went very well on Saturday. Kayt was home for reading week and being a "stranger" she did the assessment - Thanks Kayt! The pups did really well.

Carolina (Willow) is just like Cleo was and will be going home to a brother dog. Frosty and Vespa also are going home to brother dogs and love interacting with the big dogs. Beemer (Alfred) is a little darling, and has 2 special sisters at his home. The wavy boys ( Oliver and Cosmo) are going to adventurous lives with their two families. Amarella (Bella) and Katerina are preparing for active lives and maybe some time in the show ring!

Pups are growing well and eating us out of house and home. They love it outside.

Puppy packages are ready to be printed. Microchipping is completed. Health assessments will take place tomorrow. Our little babies are growing up!.....

Cleo is back to her old happy self. She and Myleigh are spending more time together grooming each other and playing outside. I think she will do well with her pups leaving.

Week 7 already!!!

Time seems to fly by...Suddenly, it seems, the pups are eating solid food 4 times a day and have been moved to the larger area in the downstairs family room. Not a day too soon, we had a day above freezing (and sunshine!) so outside we went with our treasures. We were waiting for a break in the long stretch of cold weather that was sticking around and making the winter longer and longer.

The little ones just wanted to sniff everything and then get a taste of the big world. Everything was tested - the grass, the snow, the patio, the walls...They were very thorough and after 15 - 20 minutes all went back inside and had a warm cozy nap!

Cleo is still feeding the pups but often waits for them to have their solid food first and finishes with a Mommy dessert. Their natural diet has progressed from ground meat to meat on the bone. The little ones are trying to chew the bones but haven't managed to break one yet. They should be more successful in the next few days.

We will be doing the temperament testing on the 14th and we'll be calling our families later that day.

By now you should be preparing for your puppy's arrival at home - getting a large sized crate, some grooming tools, and seriously looking into the nutritional needs of your new family member. We are always available to help with quesions you may have when looking at options. Also check the link on week 5 (the PWDCA link) to read about a typical day with your PWD puppy - These pups do not just sit and wait for you to notice them.

Make sure you have booked your pickup times with us. Please plan on at least 90 minutes for pick up. We have to accommodate a number of families who are coming from a distance. Most of you have already arranged this with us.

Starting Week 5

Portuguese Water Dog puppies develop slowly. They don't hit full maturity until age 2. As puppies they are now staying awake for longer periods, running and head butting each other, licking each other's facing and chewing on each other and their own body parts. Cleo and Myleigh continue to clean and clean up after the pups. All the pups have numerous teeth through - ouch!

Everyone remarks on how calm Cleo is. She doesn't mind anyone sitting in with the pups for a cuddle. She sometimes will lick them in your hands to reassure herself that all is well. I thinks she believes you are here to visit her not the puppies! All the pups have teeth through today - poor Cleo!

What a change in a week! Puppies are starting to be more active between feeds. They love their new space in the kitchen. They will come to us when called. They are becoming more vocal with mews and the very occasional bark or growl. They are starting to mouth each other. No teeth through yet. I'm sure Cleo is thankful for that. Cleo is constantly ready for another meal. Myleigh, Cleo's sister is happy to play Auntie and clean and play with pups. She particularly loves Frostie! We have many interested and confirmed puppy families who are visiting on a regular basis. This socialization is great for the pups; of course the adult dogs think you are visiting them.

Beginning Week 3!

Every puppy has their eyes open. Occasionally we hear a little "bark"! They are making great efforts to walk around. Most of their time is still spent eating and sleeping. Up until now they have been in the puppy pool in our bedroom! Saturday morning they will move to the medium pen (4'X8') in our kitchen. It will be easy for Cleo to get in and out of the pen to care for her babies. The kitchen has a large bay window where the puppies will sunbath and watch the snow fly! Being in the kitchen allows everyone easy access to play with puppies and they get used to all the noises of a busy family. Toe nails have been clipped 3 times to protect Cleo's tender underbelly! She must be making good milk for them to grow so fast (especially their nails!). This will be an exciting week!

Puppies are nursing and sleeping. Their eyes and ears remain closed. All pups have gained weight - not one lost any weight! The heat lamp is helping the puppies regulate their temperature. Cleo seems to be feeding 4 or 5 puppies at a time and then feeding the rest, while the first group sleeps. Cleo is eating more than twice her usual rations and is drinking well too. She has started to rest outside of the puppy pool at times. She is very proud of her babies!
